What happens during the test days?

During the test days, on the Test Area 01 a controlled and non-public operation takes place. The route is closed to regular traffic, so all procedures can be carried out under defined safety and release rules.

The test vehicle „Hermann“, which is on a round 50-metre test track is operated. Additionally, it is possible to Assembly hall to visit.

The aim of the test days is to test, validate and further develop the central functions of the autonomous system under real conditions.

 

The focus is on the following topics:

  • Commissioning and calibration of the vehicles
  • Calibration and validation of sensor systems
  • Obstacle detection
  • Verification of safety-critical functions
  • Perception in a closed loop
  • Routine operations training

The vehicle is driving in the ATO Mode (Automatic Train Operation) defines trajectories autonomously and is subsequently reset via remote control. All test runs are recorded and used for later analysis and system validation.

On the test field, the Test vehicle „Hermann“ tested over a distance of approximately 50 metres at a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

assembly hall is the Test vehicle „Thusnelda“, which is currently being prepared for further test series. In addition, three more trial vehicles are currently being built there.

The test days are part of the research project. enableATO.

This will involve testing and further developing key functions of the autonomous system under real-world conditions. The focus will be on aspects such as sensor technology, obstacle detection, safety functions, and the interplay between the vehicle, software, and environment.

The test days 2026 will be at the Test Field 01 in Extertal-Bösingfeld carried out.

Additionally, the Assembly hall in BegaPark in Dörentrup-Humfeld available for demonstrations, vehicle setup and background discussions.

The trial vehicles „Herrmann“ and „Thusnelda“ deployed are at Technology Readiness Level 5 (Testbed in operational environment) and not prototypes or qualified systems with proof of approval. The journeys are subject to standard safety precautions but are undertaken at the participants' own risk.

The roots of the project reach back to the Lippe region.

An early impulse was the „Youth Under Steam“ project as well as the so-called Europa wagon, which dealt with regional development, cultural projects, and future prospects along the railway lines.

These activities ultimately gave rise to the „CountryCab“ idea, from which today's MONOCAB system evolved.

MONOCAB is being developed in East Westphalia-Lippe (OWL).

The research and testing sites are predominantly located in the district of Lippe and specifically in the Nordlippe region.

The region's historic railway lines form an important infrastructural and historical reference point for the development of MONOCAB.

In particular, the Extertalbahn and the Begatalbahn demonstrate the potential of existing rail infrastructure for new mobility concepts in rural areas.
