National importance

- from North Rhine-Westphalia

The MONOCAB shows the economic and innovative power in NRW. The vehicle is to be developed and produced at NRW's business location – as part of the transformation of the „automotive industry“ location towards Industry 5.0 with „Mobility-as-a-Service“.

This will make NRW, starting in the Lippe district and the OWL region, a global pioneer for purposefully reactivated mobility as a public service in rural areas. This requires the new – yet integrated into the old: existing routes must be preserved. Because they are spaces of possibility for forms of integrated mobility. Including those we don't yet know!

Then they are mobile, people stay put (and drive less). And then new people arrive, such as skilled workers for the many companies in the countryside, including hidden champions.

This makes the MONOCAB a project of national importance – with good prospects for international impact! The project is groundbreaking for similar regions all over the world.

  • „Solutions for complex mobility“ made in NRW
  • „The Great Future in the Countryside“
  • Enhancing the attractiveness of rural areas
  • Sustainable, efficient and attractive mobility infrastructure
  • Aimed at the needs of the rural population
  • Social justice, intergenerational justice, inclusion
  • Goal: „Living in the countryside without your own car“ – also for future generations

You'll be able to join soon. But first, we'll get down to business – and you can get involved. Whether as an entrepreneur, an investor, or even a future operator in your own formats!

The research project is intended to become a company that offers the product and associated services: the vehicle and the operating model, as well as an operational concept for reactivating rural routes.

A new start-up is to market the MONOCAB: The idea is not only intended to catch on in NRW, but to become a model for all rural areas throughout Germany.

This project of national importance is moving forward and needs further visionaries. For the meaningful use of what is already there. For connecting the benefits of individual and public transport. And for a focus on social justice, intergenerational equity, and inclusion. As good as your own car: made in NRW, tested in OWL.

You are cordially invited to join us! Let's shape a great future in the countryside together!

  • Campus bus at the Innovation Campus Lemgo (ICL) as an illustrative example
  • Shuttle in the Future Garden Dortmund, International Garden Exhibition Ruhr Metropolis 2027
  • Works traffic
  • Small goods transport
  • Construction site traffic (e.g. in tunnel construction)
  • Innovation tourism

Unlike similar technology projects, MONOCAB is not about innovative transport aimed at generating financial returns. It is about democratising rural mobility. About utilising the underutilised. About resource conservation and sustainability. About the state providing essential public services. About social return on investment (SROI) instead of return on investment (ROI).

serves not only as a mobility solution but also as an engine for innovation in rural areas – with positive economic impacts on the region as a centre for innovation. A good example of this is the expected „innovation tourism“ – self-induced traffic once the system is first deployed. This means visitors will come to the countryside just to try out the MONOCAB.

  • Social Participation and Inclusion: Accessible Design for People with Reduced Mobility
  • Intergenerational justice: all age groups benefit equally from an efficient and flexible transport system
  • Economic impulses: a mobility solution as an engine of innovation for rural regions
  • Promoting sustainable mobility: Public services through basic mobility provision in rural regions
  • Integration into existing mobility chains: Mobility gaps are closed, and a seamless transition between different modes of transport becomes possible
